The Iemoto System
How Reiki is Passed on in Japanese Tradition and Jikiden Reiki®
When we explore the origins of Reiki in Japan and through Jikiden Reiki®, we encounter a vital cultural foundation often overlooked in the West: the Iemoto system (家元). Understanding this system is key to appreciating why Usui Sensei and his student, Hayashi Sensei, taught Reiki as a simple, direct, and deeply experiential practice and why Chiyoko Yamaguchi and her son Tadao kept the same method for transmitting Reiki. And imply that in the name of their institute – Jikiden Reiki®.
For those practising Jikiden Reiki®, this traditional framework explains why our training remains rooted in practical application rather than additional theory.
What is the Iemoto System?
The Iemoto system is the traditional Japanese method for the lifelong transmission of “do” (ways) or “jutsu” (arts). It has governed the preservation of Japanese cultural heritage for centuries, including:
- Sadō (Tea Ceremony)
- Kadō (Flower Arranging)
- Budō (Martial Arts)
- Shodō (Calligraphy)
In the Iemoto model:
- Direct Transmission: Knowledge is passed from teacher to student in person (Jikiden = directly passed on).
- Lineage Integrity: The lineage is strictly maintained to ensure the art remains “pure” and unchanged by personal ego or interpretation. Only through Teachers, students do not hold a lineage.
- Experiential Learning: Mastery is gained through “doing” rather than long lectures. Students observe, imitate, and refine their skills over time.
- Structured Progression: The teacher determines a student’s readiness for the next level based on their dedication and sensitivity.
Usui Sensei and the Iemoto Approach
When Mikao Usui founded Shin Shin Kaizen Usui Reiki Ryoho, he utilised the cultural framework of his era. He did not design a “course” in the Western sense; he established a practice based on Iemoto principles:
- Reiju: Was given in person, repeatedly, to strengthen the student’s connection.
- Meetings: Regular practice sessions focused on developing the ability to identify and interpret Byosen levels (areas of toxin accumulation), alongside group healing, emphasising consistency over ‘one-off’ certificates.”
- Simplicity: There was no need for extensive manuals or complex systems. The focus was on the five precepts (Gokai) and hands-on treatment.
Hayashi Sensei and the Clinical Evolution
Chujiro Hayashi, one of Usui Sensei’s most prominent students, brought a disciplined, methodical approach to the practice. While he introduced structured clinical procedures and further developed Byosen from his understanding through practice, he remained deeply committed to the Iemoto spirit. Most importantly, that Hayashi Sensei didn’t change what he had learned – if he had, he would not have passed on the Reiki method as Usui’s treatment, he would have changed its name.
It was this authentic Reiki that Hayashi Sensei passed to Chiyoko Yamaguchi Sensei. Because she practised this method within her family in Japan, as well as with those who sought her help, away from Western influence, the original Iemoto structure was preserved.
In Japanese tradition, it is uncommon to alter or add to a method learned from one’s teacher while continuing to use the name of that school or lineage.

Understanding the Iemoto system helps modern practitioners appreciate the distinct nature of Jikiden Reiki®. Without adding symbols, chakra theories, or personal interpretations, Jikiden Reiki® remains “directly taught” as it was in the 1930s.
