Meditation is a way to create a sense of calm, stillness and focus. Reiki can offer a similar opportunity for receivers to slow down, step away from everyday distractions and find a place of deep relaxation. With regular Reiki treatments, just as with ongoing meditation, it is possible for this sense of relaxation and calm to be sustained outside of the Reiki session.

For people who find meditating challenging, Reiki provides an alternative way to relax and move into a state of stillness as well as being a way to create time for yourself.

For those who already meditate, some enjoy combining Reiki with meditation as part of their wider approach to wellbeing. They also find receiving regular Reiki helps them in their meditation sessions.

For those interested in furthering their experience with relaxation and meditation, the traditional Japanese Reiki method of Jikiden Reiki(opens in new tab) offers treatment sessions with practitioners trained in teachings passed down through the original Japanese teachers and traditions.

Giving Reiki to others as a practitioner can be a meditative experience in itself and offers a gateway to deeper meditation for those who are interested. If you would like to learn Jikiden Reiki, a traditional Japanese Reiki passed down through generations in Japan, you can find teachers in the UK here(opens in new tab).

What Is Reiki Meditation?

Reiki meditation brings together the calming, balanced nature of meditation with the experience of receiving or practising Reiki.

As a receiver, you can simply sit or lie comfortably, close your eyes and allow yourself to become still. There is nothing you have to do, although it is helpful to take a few deep slow breaths to begin with and let your attention settle naturally. As the Reiki flows, both body and mind ease into relaxation and a natural state of calm stillness. The first time you receive Reiki this feeling of calm meditation tends to last anything from a few hours to a few days. As you have more regular Reiki sessions, your body begins to learn to relax in this way and these meditative benefits not only last longer but often expand into areas of everyday life.

Reiki meditation for those practising Reiki can simply be a feeling of deep peace when giving Reiki, or you may want to bring Reiki into your own meditation practice. There is no single way to approach Reiki meditation, and your experience may vary depending on what feels comfortable for you.

Going deeper into Reiki Meditation

For those wanting to go deeper, Reiki can provide a pathway to great inner peace. Connecting with Reiki energy brings profound opportunities for meditation and connection to our true nature. The founder of Reiki, Mikao Usui, was meditating when he first encountered this energy and his creation of the Gokai or Reiki Principles points towards this aspect of Reiki too. Learning to become a Reiki practitioner allows you to access this energy in abundance with ease and can lead to greater depths if you want it to.

Reiki meditation in this respect comes from consistent Reiki practise along with efforts to live the Reiki Principles, allowing a natural deepening into both meditation and presence. This incorporates both sitting meditation and beginning to live each moment of life as a meditation in itself.

Reiki for Relaxation and Stress

So many of us find life in today's world overstimulating, stressful and demanding. Given this, the need to relax, find a way to reduce everyday stress and create quiet time for ourselves becomes crucial. Meditation is one way to do this, and Reiki can offer a similar experience, but with the following added benefits:

The importance of relaxation can be vastly underrated. Many illnesses begin with an imbalance in the systems of the body, and stress is known as a contributing factor to changes in our vital signs. Focus on Reiki and meditation in order to bring greater relaxation into your everyday life, and to reduce stress, is a wonderful gift to give yourself.

A Reiki treatment(opens in new tab) gives you the opportunity to lie back, relax and focus on your own needs while a trained practitioner gives Reiki. Some people become deeply relaxed during a session, while others simply enjoy the calm and quiet it provides.

“I find Jikiden Reiki treatments take me to total relaxation.

I often fall asleep and wake up feeling refreshed, revived and chilled out.”

What Happens During a Reiki Meditation Session?

If you are interested in experiencing Reiki as part of your meditation or relaxation routine, a trained Jikiden Reiki practitioner can provide a calm and comfortable environment for your session.

You will remain fully clothed and can sit or lie comfortably while receiving Reiki. Your practitioner will explain what to expect beforehand and answer any questions you may have.

You can simply close your eyes, take a few deep breaths and allow yourself to relax. If you already have a meditation practice, you can use techniques that you find helpful during the session, although it’s often a good idea to let the Reiki session take you into meditation naturally.

There is no need to achieve a particular state of mind. Some people become deeply relaxed immediately while others gradually drift into relaxation during the session. Others remain more aware of their surroundings during the Reiki treatment but still feel the benefits and feel relaxed. Whatever you experience is okay, everyone perceives and receives Reiki differently and each individual session may feel different too. Trust that your body and your systems are receiving and responding in the way that is needed for you at that moment.

Remove uncertainty around the practical experience and help the user understand what to expect if they choose to try Reiki. Keep this focused on the recipient's experience, the setting, positioning, relaxation and interaction with the practitioner, rather than turning it into a detailed DIY meditation guide.
